Black marble and stone: types, names and how to choose
Black is the most elegant colour in natural stone, and also the most demanding. Not all blacks are alike: the vein pattern and the type of stone change, and so do the uses they can take. Here is how to choose well.
The families of black stone
Black with white veins
The classic. The reference is Nero Marquina, Spain's signature black marble, quarried in the Basque Country: an intense black background with bold white veins. It works as well in a hotel bathroom as in a checkerboard floor with a white marble.
Black and gold
The most luxurious blacks. Italian Portoro is one of the most exclusive black marbles in the world, with gold and ochre veins. Along the same lines are Port Laurent, Portoro Dominicano, Belvedere and Etna Black, whose golden patches look like embers. They pair especially well with brass, dark wood and warm light.
Dark stones with movement
Dark stones with bands or flashes that add depth: Black Mirage, with grey bands and crystal flashes, or Copacabana, with bold white waves. These are stones for a feature wall.
Hard blacks: granite and quartzite
If the black is going on a hard-working kitchen countertop, choose a hard stone. Lemurian granite has crystals that flash blue, and there are dark quartzites such as Titanium and Via Lactea. See marble vs quartzite.
What to know before choosing a black stone
- Polished black marble shows everything: hard water marks, fingerprints and etch marks stand out more than on a light stone. In bathrooms, dry it after use.
- The finish changes the result. Polished, black is deep and reflective; honed or leathered, it turns charcoal grey and hides wear better. See our guide to finishes.
- Ask for photos of the actual slab. In veined blacks, the amount of veining changes a lot from slab to slab.
- For high-traffic floors (lobbies, retail), consider a non-polished finish or a hard stone: wear shows sooner on blacks.
Where black stone works best
- Hotel and restaurant bathrooms, especially with brass fittings.
- Book-matched feature walls.
- Bars, reception counters and furniture.
- Black and white checkerboard floors, paired with a white marble.
