Spanish marble: Crema Marfil, Negro Marquina, Emperador and Rojo Alicante

Spain is one of the world's major producers and exporters of natural stone. Some of its marbles can be recognised in hotels and buildings on every continent. These are the main ones.

Crema Marfil

Spain's most famous marble: a light, even cream background with soft veins. It is quarried mainly in Pinoso (Alicante), around Monte Coto, and in quarries in the neighbouring Region of Murcia.

Negro Marquina (Nero Marquina)

Deep black with fine, sharply defined white veins. It comes from the Markina area in the Basque Country. Technically it is a very fine-grained black limestone, but it is sold as marble.

Emperador (dark and light)

Brown with a network of lighter veins. The main Dark Emperador deposits are in the Region of Murcia, around Jumilla and Yecla, and in southern Albacete.

Rojo Alicante

Intense red with white veins, from the province of Alicante. It starred in floors and staircases for decades and is now making a strong comeback in interior design. See real slabs on our Rojo Alicante page.

Blanco Macael

Spain's white marble par excellence, from the Sierra de los Filabres in Macael (Almería). White with soft grey veins, it has been used since antiquity and is the Spanish alternative to Italian whites.

Marbles from the Valencia region

The Valencia area produces warm-toned marbles such as Crema Valencia (from Barxeta) and Rosa Valencia, with a salmon-pink background, widely used in Mediterranean floors and cladding.
