HS code for marble, quartzite and granite: 2515, 2516, 2506 and 6802
If you import or export natural stone, the tariff code determines duties, paperwork and sometimes whether the goods clear smoothly. It comes down to two things: what the stone is and how much it has been worked. Here are the usual codes for blocks, sawn slabs and polished slabs.
This guide is for orientation only. Classification is decided by customs; always confirm it with your customs broker or freight forwarder before shipping.
HS codes and national codes
- HS (Harmonized System): the first 6 digits, the same in almost every country.
- National codes: each country adds its own digits after the 6-digit HS code: 8 for the EU Combined Nomenclature, 10 for the US HTS or the EU TARIC, and so on. The duty rate depends on the importing country.
That is why the 6-digit HS code is what should always appear on the invoice and the offer.
Raw or merely cut stone (chapter 25)
Blocks and slabs that are only sawn, rectangular and not further worked:
| HS | What it covers |
|---|---|
| 2515.11 | Marble and travertine, crude or roughly trimmed (quarry blocks) |
| 2515.12 | Marble and travertine merely cut, by sawing or otherwise, into rectangular or square blocks or slabs |
| 2515.20 | Other calcareous building stone, and alabaster |
| 2506.20 | Quartzite (crude, or merely cut into rectangular blocks or slabs) |
| 2516.11 / 2516.12 | Granite, crude / merely cut into blocks or slabs |
This is the chapter for quarry blocks, the main export to countries with their own sawmills, such as China.
Worked stone: polished slabs and pieces (heading 6802)
Once a slab is polished, honed, edged or cut to size, it is no longer "merely sawn" and moves to heading 6802:
| HS | What it covers |
|---|---|
| 6802.10 | Small tiles, cubes and similar articles (mosaics) of any stone |
| 6802.21 | Marble, travertine and alabaster, simply cut or sawn, with a flat surface |
| 6802.23 | Granite, simply cut or sawn |
| 6802.29 | Other stone, simply cut or sawn |
| 6802.91 | Marble, travertine and alabaster: other (polished, edged, finished pieces) |
| 6802.93 | Granite: other |
| 6802.99 | Other stone (for example, polished quartzite) |
Grey areas
- Onyx: decorative onyx is calcite, so it is normally treated with marble. Confirm with your broker, especially if the slab is mesh- and resin-backed.
- Resin-reinforced or backed slabs: the backing may change the classification in some countries.
- Semi-precious stone slabs assembled with resin (amethyst, sodalite…): these are manufactured products; always get the classification before quoting.
- "Quartzites" that are really dolomite: if the stone is actually a dolomite (a limestone), it may fall with calcareous stones rather than quartzite. See dolomite vs quartzite.
What your customs broker needs
- Stone type and trade name.
- Condition: block, sawn slab, polished slab or finished piece.
- Dimensions, thickness and weight. Use our weight calculator.
- Origin of the stone (quarry or country) for the certificate of origin.
We export slabs and blocks worldwide and prepare the paperwork with our forwarder. Importers and trade buyers can see our trade page or ask for an offer. More on cross-border buying in buying natural stone from abroad.
