Onyx countertops: pros, cons and where they really work
A backlit onyx countertop is probably the most spectacular stone piece you can have. It is also one of the most delicate. Put it in the right place and you will never regret it.
What onyx is
The onyx used in interiors is a calcite stone that forms layer by layer from mineral-rich water in caves and springs. That is why it has its coloured bands and, above all, why it is translucent: light passes through it. Note that in mineralogy "onyx" is also a variety of chalcedony, a different semi-precious stone. In building and design, "onyx" always means the calcite stone.
Pros
- Unique beauty: bands of honey, cream, green or pink that no other stone has.
- Translucency: backlit, it glows from within. See our backlit onyx guide.
- Every slab is unique, and book-matched slabs create spectacular symmetrical patterns.
Cons (be clear about them)
- It is soft: as soft as marble or softer. A knife will scratch it.
- It reacts to acids: lemon or vinegar leave dull etch marks.
- It is brittle: slabs usually come reinforced with mesh and resin on the back. That is normal, not a defect.
- It absorbs: it needs sealing and care with stains.
Where onyx really works
- Bars and reception counters, especially backlit. This is its signature use.
- Bathroom vanities that do not see harsh use.
- Island fronts and backlit feature walls.
- Coffee and dining tables that are looked after.
Where we do not recommend it: as the main worktop in a kitchen where you cook a lot. If you want the onyx effect in the kitchen, put it on the island front or the bar, and use a harder stone (a quartzite) where you prep food.
Care
- Mild soap and a soft cloth. No limescale removers, vinegar or harsh products.
- Always use coasters and trivets.
- Seal at installation and check with the water-drop test every few months.
- If the polish dulls over time, a stone professional can re-polish it.
How much does it cost?
Onyx sits at the high end. Its price depends on the type of onyx, the specific slab and whether it will be backlit (the lighting is a separate cost), and it changes with the market. Request a quote with your measurements and we will send you photos of real slabs.
