Leathered finish on stone: pros, cons and care
A leathered finish leaves stone with a soft, gently undulating texture, like leather, and a muted satin sheen. It has become popular on quartzite countertops and dark stones because it hides fingerprints and marks. Here is what it is, how it looks, its pros and cons, and how to look after it.
What a leathered finish is
After the slab is cut, it is run under abrasive brushes that wear the softer parts of the stone slightly more than the hard ones. The result is a very gentle relief that follows the stone's natural pattern, with a satin sheen. It is not the same as a honed finish: honed is flat and smooth, while leathered has a texture you can feel with your hand.
How it changes the stone
- The colour deepens slightly, especially on dark stones.
- The pattern gains relief: veins and crystals sit at slightly different heights.
- The sheen is soft, with no mirror reflections.
You can see it on real slabs: Taj Mahal and Abyss Black have photos in both polished and leathered finishes, and Krypton is often leathered because it brings out its texture.
Pros
- Hides fingerprints, drips and water spots, which show badly on dark polished stone.
- Disguises small etch marks on calcite-bearing stones, because there is no perfect gloss to interrupt.
- A pleasant feel and a natural look that suits current kitchens.
- Less slippery than polished on dry indoor floors, though for wet areas you should check the stone's measured slip resistance.
Cons
- The texture holds more dirt than a smooth surface: wipe with a cloth and occasionally use a soft brush.
- It needs sealing, as the more open surface absorbs a little more. See do you need to seal stone.
- Not every stone suits it. It works best on quartzites, granites and stones with minerals of different hardness. Very soft marbles get less relief.
- The final colour differs from polished. If you fell for a polished photo, ask to see the slab leathered.

| Sheen | High | Matt | Satin |
| Feel | Smooth | Smooth | Textured |
| Prints and marks | Show more | Show less | Show less |
| Colour | Most intense | Lighter | Deep |
| Cleaning | Very easy | Easy | A little more work |
Where it works best
- Kitchen countertops and islands in quartzite or granite: its signature use. See our quartzite countertops guide.
- Bathrooms and walls where you want a more natural feel.
- Dark stones, where polish shows every fingerprint.
How to care for it
- Clean daily with water, neutral soap and a microfibre cloth.
- If dirt settles in the texture, use a soft-bristled brush.
- No acidic or abrasive cleaners.
- Reseal periodically depending on the stone and use: try the water-drop test.
A leathered finish is chosen on the slab, not from a brochure. Ask us for photos of the slabs available in this finish and we will confirm which stones take it well. We ship worldwide.
